Thanks to unique geographical situation at a crossroads of land and
waterways, which link Europe and Asia, the Volgograd Region played and
play till now an important role in history of the Moscow Russia, the
Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation.
Many times in its history the
Region was at the center of the greatest events of Russian social and
government life, was an arena of mighty historical cataclysms.
Many centuries the
steppe between the Volga river and the Don river was the center of cruel
battles. The armies of national leaders were here (Stephan Razin,
Kandratiy Bulavin, Emelian Pugachev…). This lend, praised by nameless
narrators and well-known poets, remembers daring projects of Peter the
Great and the toil of ordinary German immigrants, devoid of ostentatious
pathos, who had been growing and processing seeds of mustard in
Sarepta.
Even in the times of
Peter the Great, taking into account the significance of crossroads of
land and waterways between two rivers, it was an attempt to break the
channel between the Volga river and the Don river. This national dream
was realized in 1952 year by opening the 100 km "Volgo-Donskoy"
navigable canal.
The Volgograd Region has a special importance in Soviet period of Russian history.
Among the first cities of Russia Tsaritsin became a stronghold of
revolution in the south. The working class of city together with first
military troops of regular Red Army prevented Petrograd and Moscow from
threat of hunger.
The remote chief town of a
district of the Russian Federation, Tsaritsin, has become a large trade
and industrial center of country by the end of previous and at the
beginning of current year.
In 2001 year the Volgograd Region has three anniversaries at the same
time - 80 years of Tsaritsin province, 65 years of the Stalingrad Region
and 40 years of the Volgograd Region. The creation of separated
administrative-territorial formation in post-revolutionary years tells
about the appreciation of economic and military-strategical potential in
our region by government leaders.
Here, at the bank of
the Volga river in record short terms there were built the first tractor
giant factory in the USSA, powerful according to that time
thermoelectric power station, large shipyard. There were radically
reconstructed metallurgical woodworking productions and the beautiful
residential districts.
In stern 1942 year,
during the Stalingrad battle the city turned into a boiling wall of
fire. the battle for Stalingrad was lasting 200 day and nights.
At May 1, 1945 year
by the order of Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Stalingrad city there
was given a honorary title of Hero-City for outstanding services before
fatherland, courage and heroism, which were shown by the Soviets in
great fight with german-fascism aggressors.
The feat of
Stalingrad rebirth had become a continuation of feat of arms. The whole
country had helped to Hero-City to heal the wounds faster and return to a
peaceful life. The restoration of destroyed Hero-City, the building of
the "Volgo-Donskoy" navigable canal, then the largest in Europe
Hydroelectric power station, required from local habitants and migrated
specialists of great heroic efforts from all places of the USSA.
